The Colossus can be found on the road to the Valley of the Kings and was the entrance to the original roadway. For many years the Egyptians believed that the spirit of a dead king inhabited the left hand statue as it could often be heard wailing and crying. After archaeologists came to 'renovate' the statues the wailing stopped - it had been caused by the wind going through a crack in the statue.
