I only stared Kayaking a couple of months back. I had always fancied having a go as it looks fun and we have a white water centre nearby. I found a local club on the internet and luckily they were starting a beginners course so I joined up. The first few weeks were spent on the reservoir, until doing my 1 star kayak exam, and then I did my first river trip at Stratford-upon-Avon and passed my exam on the same day! When the nights draw in and its too dark to use the reservoir we use a local swimming pool for practice. I thoroughly enjoy it, and believe me its not as easy or relaxing as it looks and I hope to continue and get my own Kayak soon.
